13/09/2010: 6th Dan Success for Alan

Alan Carlisle, one of 6 instructors at Worsley Judo Club was presented with the honour of his 6th Dan or rokudan (六段:ろくだん) sixth degree black belt. This took place on Sunday 12th September at the British Judo Council National squad training session at Tamworth in front of the senior council members and the National Squad. Mr Mealing, Vice president of the BJC presented Alan with his belt.

Alan was graded to first dan in 1976 at the age of just 17, he has since gone up through the ranks and held his 5th Dan for the past 12 years before receiving his 6th dan on Sunday. He commented, “I am completely humbled to have received such an honour to have my colleagues at the BJC bestow me with this grade and the coveted red and white belt – it’s fantastic feeling and I am elated.” Alan was awarded the grade for services to Judo having been the woman’s National coach for many years and having taught at courses throughout the country and has influenced many Judokas over the years at every level. Alan’s name in Judo is as recognised as can be for his commitment to the sport. He is widely respected and trusted by many Judokas throughout the UK. Many of his previous students now run their own clubs and have achieved their own black belt status thanks to Alan’s motivation and care towards his fellow sportsmen and women.

The lower dan grades (Black Belts up to 5th Dan) can be attained through a grading examination or as in Alan’s case, through competition. The higher dan grades require years of experience and contribution to the sport of Judo.

Alan is 1 of only 20 in the BJC to achieve 6th dan, and joins his fellow judoka Matthew Clempner, also of Worsley Judo Club. The club, based at Linnyshaw Mill boasts the largest permanent mat area in Manchester and offers judo lessons to both seniors and juniors (4 years +). They have had many successes in recent months winning many medals and awards, a recent event being the Westgate Championship in Newcastle.
